Lori’s daughter Emma was born with Congenital Myotonic Dystrophy, a rare chromosome mutation that directly affects muscles including the heart and lungs. Growing up, Emma endured surgeries, cardiac stress, and breathing challenges bringing her to London Children’s Hospital. Who was constantly by her side? Her mom and older brothers surrounding her with unconditional love. Staying bedside at Paediatric Clinical Care Unit (PPCU) was a must for Lori to make sure she was there when Emma needed her. Just steps away from Emma’s room, she found a warm welcome waiting for her at Ronald McDonald Family Room London. It was there where Lori found the perfect place to have a shower, a hot cup of coffee, a nap and bit of quiet time. A place she could feel the warmth and love as soon as she walked through the door. Today, Emma is a beautiful 18-year-old young woman. She has a smile that can light up a room, and the tenacity to face any obstacle in her way. As a proud Special Olympian, Emma reminds us that with love, support and determination, anything is possible!
